Grand Rapids, Michigan is proud to kick off the summer season with the 45th Annual Festival of the Arts held in the downtown district. Michigan’s hard-working residents endure tough winters, but want to let their hair down when warmer weather arrives. Everyone is welcome to attend and gain a better understanding about art and local culture.
A Historical Look
It’s hard to miss the 43-foot-tall sculpture gracing City Hall’s entrance. This red metal artwork was made by the great Alexander Calder. As a downtown fixture since 1969, the “Calder” was the inspiration for the arts festival. To liven up the community, and teach everyone about the arts in general, three days were dedicated each June to this exciting festival. Grand Rapids is proud to see it blossom each year into a community event that doesn’t discriminate.
Donation And Volunteer Support
Except for the food, every part of the festival is free. Every socioeconomic level is welcome to participate and view artwork and performances. This free event is only possible with local donations throughout the year. Even a donation of just $5 helps the festival remain an exciting and fun-filled event over the weekend. If you can’t donate money, consider donating time. Booth operators are always needed, allowing you to socialize with the lovely Grand Rapids community. Only two or three hours are necessary to be a volunteer.
What To Do
It’s nearly impossible to be bored at the annual festival. Walk around all the art booths to see works from children or established artists. Dabble in several food booths to curb your sweet tooth too. With six stages to choose from, there is always music or dance to watch and enjoy. Even poetry and storytelling take place, giving you a full range of artistic abilities. Art is more than paint on a canvas because it encompasses all the other senses, including sound.
Display Or Create
If you’re a struggling artist longing to have some exposure, consider setting up a booth to create art on-site. Passersby will marvel at your technique, giving them a chance to donate or even buy the artwork. Alternatively, set up a display of all your art. Because artists need different locations for some inspiration, you can show off your work to potential buyers or employers. The festival encourages free thought and creativity.
Join the Grand Rapids community to share in artistic endeavors. You’ll be amazed at the wide range of talents in your neighborhood.
