Blandford Nature Center Offers 143 Acres Of Land And Wildlife In Grand Rapids

The Blandford Nature Center is so much more than what the modest name suggests. It’s a gathering place for families to connect with nature on all levels. It’s a lovely place where families enjoy the beauty of Michigan nature. It’s a growing place where families can see and even participate in the growth of BNC, the natural surroundings, the food they eat, and especially themselves. Growth through education and communing with each other and nature are the best benefits derived from involvement with the BNC.

Community involvement is what makes Blandford Nature Center the pearl of the Grand Rapids area. Everyone has the opportunity to participate in the essence of BNC, to help it grow, to contribute to its success and future. With 143 acres, the Blandford Nature Center has much to offer, and local families love to participate.

A partial list of the many activities, events and programs available includes:

  • Community photography contest
  • Field trips
  • Homeschool programs
  • Summer camp
  • Farmer’s market
  • Community garden
  • Hiking trails
  • Wildlife education

There’s plenty to do for adults, teens and the younger ones as well at BNC. From educational events about invasive species control to making a scarecrow to Halloween activities to learning about and recreating pioneer crafts, there’s always something interesting, educational and/or fun buzzing.

At BNC, families can rent garden space and work their garden with other families enjoying the process of growing their own healthy foods. It’s one of the most enjoyable things about the BNC, one that families get so much out of the Blandford Nature Center. Farming with neighbors, sharing smiles, laughter and knowledge in the sunshine — what could be better than that? In the fall, neighbors and families reap the benefits of their labors. Many get together for harvest picnics or a large harvest meal.

Children delight in fall trail walks and discovering the signs of animals preparing for winter hibernation. It’s a wonderful learning experience that underscores the beauty and awe of animals in their natural habitat. Additional fall/winter activities includes a visit with members of the Oddawa tribe, a learning experience and connection with the area’s origins. Astronomy is another field that is explored in the winter.

The true beauty of the Blandford Nature Center is its presence in a world that so often focuses on modern technology, omitting the importance of nature and traditional values. The Blandford Nature Center gives the oldest generation an opportunity to relish in tradition and the wonders of nature. It provides the youngest generation the opportunity to learn from it all and grow for the future.
